We at the Healthier Futures Lab (HealthFuL) are interested in a variety of aspects of substance use. In particular, how alcohol and tobacco use intersect. To get the best results out of research, we know that creating an environment that is most similar to the real-world scenarios is important to understanding our subject matter. To help us accomplish these goals, we have created a research bar in the Department of Family and Community Medicine located on the second floor of Turfland Clinic to help conduct this research. Our Drinking and Tobacco Administration Bar (DaTA Bar) is in a negative pressure room which allows us to conduct research where participants can smoke or vape indoors while able to consume alcohol at the same time. This creates a unique research environment where we can recreate conditions that are similar to how people might use different substances together.

We have several studies in our lab that involve DaTA bar, but they all follow the same general pattern. After being identified through the general screener (SCREEN HERE), there is an initial in-person intake session to help determine your eligibility for a particular study. Then, depending on the study, you will be asked to complete one or more sessions that may involve alcohol and/or tobacco product consumption. Some studies may also have additional requirements/expectations, where bonus compensation is dependent on you abstaining from drinking and/or using tobacco products prior to a session.

To be eligible for one of our DaTA Bar studies, you must be at least 21 years old and meet study-specific requirements. For most of these studies, this involves regularly using alcohol and/or tobacco products (e.g., cigarettes, e-cigs, vapes).

Sessions will generally be around 2 hours in length, and the number of experimental sessions after the intake/eligibility session will be dependent on the particular study you would be enrolled into. We will provide transportation via Lyft to and from the research site at no cost to you. We provide transportation to and from the research site because some sessions alcohol will be available and want to ensure participant safety after the research sessions.

To help determine eligibility for the study, we have a screener that can be found here: SCREEN NOW. As mentioned above, all studies have an initial session where we will determine your eligibility. Because we have different studies with different expectations for participation, we will provide you with specific information about those different studies. Your time for participation will be compensated, and it specific to the study you enroll into.
